10 must have healthy snacks to take on the road
Spring Break is here! If you’re planning on hitting the road with your family, packing the car with plenty of snacks will be essential. You just know that someone will announce that they are hungry as soon as you pull onto the highway.
When hunger hits, it’s tempting to stock up on chocolate bars and candy at the next gas station. But, as good as they may taste, they have absolutely no nutritional value to help your body get what it needs.
Packing healthy snacks for your road trip, will save you from the temptation of junk food because you know you have something delicious waiting for you in the cooler.
Here are our top picks for healthy road trip snacks…
Easy road trip snacks that are delicious and nutritious
Nuts and seeds
You really can’t go wrong with any type of nuts or seeds, so choose a mix of your favourites to hit the road with you.
Add in coconut chips, chunks of dark chocolate, or a selection of dried fruit to kick it up a notch. When choosing dried fruit, find the ones that have just the fruit—not sugar or corn syrup–listed as ingredients.
Veggies (and dip)
Containers filled with washed and cut vegetables like carrots, peppers, celery, broccoli, cauliflower, and cucumber are easy to grab and pair nicely with dips like Hummus, ranch, and guacamole. Cherry tomatoes are another great veggie to pack along with you—they just pop right in your mouth!
Purchase single serving containers of your favourite dips and dressings, or buy a large serving and fill small plastic containers for personal dipping and dunking.
Popcorn is fun to eat. Plus, it’s a great source of fiber and complex carbs that will help bodies stay regular out on the road.
This snack is flavourful and packed full of protein—one of the best ways to satisfy hunger. Just be sure to read the label for preservatives and sodium levels.
Crackers + Tuna
Tuna is a great way to get a healthy dose of omega-3s, and the crackers are a great way add in some complex carbs.
When it comes to snacking, you can’t go wrong with fruit. Grapes, peeled tangerines, sliced apples, and mixed berries are easy to pack in plastic food storage containers. Bananas are also a great addition—especially with a little peanut butter for added flavour and protein.
These are easy to prepare, easy to store, and easy to eat on the road. They are fairly mess-free, and packed full of protein—making them the perfect pick-me-up.
When it comes to cheese, cheddar is always a safe option. Have some fun and add in a little smoked Gouda, Havarti, or Edam. Choose cheese that you can slice in cubes—or go crazy and create shapes with cookie cutters. Kids of all ages will love it!
Any way you bake them, mini muffins are a fantastic road snacking option. They make a great breakfast on-the-go option, especially if you stuff them with fruits, oats, and even veggies and chocolate.
Sliced salami and pepperoni are a great addition to any road trip. They pair well with cheese, crackers, and fruit. Plus, they are easy to pack and don’t require cutlery!
